Conference-district apartments in New Baneshwor — close to BICC, private hospitals, and the Ring Road.

New Baneshwor, Kathmandu

Why New Baneshwor

New Baneshwor is the working district of central-east Kathmandu — the Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC), most of the major private hospitals, the National Sports Council stadium and several government ministries all sit within a single Ring-Road-adjacent kilometre. Apartments here are typically newer-build, in 4-6 storey blocks with elevator service, and skew towards travellers in Kathmandu for medical reasons, multi-day conferences, or extended business meetings rather than tourism. The airport is a quick 10-minute Ring Road taxi — closest of the central neighbourhoods.

The New Baneshwor Guide

New Baneshwor in one line: Kathmandu's functional district — closest neighbourhood to the airport, walking distance to BICC, and home to most of the city's private hospitals.

New Baneshwor sits east of central Kathmandu along the Ring Road and on the boundary of Singha Durbar (the government secretariat compound). It was largely undeveloped farmland until the late 1990s and was built up specifically as a conference / convention / medical zone — which is exactly how it functions today. BICC (Birendra International Convention Centre) on the main road hosts the bulk of the country's diplomatic conferences, trade shows and major medical congresses. Norvic International Hospital, Grande International Hospital, and B&B Hospital — three of the four largest private hospitals in Nepal — cluster within 800 metres along Kanti Path.

Who actually stays here. Conference delegates booked into nearby BICC events; medical travellers receiving treatment at Norvic, Grande or B&B (cardiology, oncology, joint replacement and IVF are the volume cases); families accompanying medical patients; and the occasional government-affairs traveller meeting at Singha Durbar (the seat of most ministries, 10 minutes' walk west). Tourists rarely base here — there's no heritage core, the restaurant scene is functional rather than memorable, and the Ring Road is busy.

The airport advantage. Tribhuvan International Airport is 3.5 km / 10-15 minutes via Ring Road outside peak — the shortest transfer of any central Kathmandu neighbourhood. For 4am flights or 11pm landings, New Baneshwor is the practical choice over Thamel or Lazimpat.

Practical infrastructure. Apartments here are typically newer-build (post-2005) in 4-6 storey concrete-frame blocks with elevators, secure parking, fibre internet and inverter back-up. Quality is consistent — there are fewer architectural surprises than in central Kathmandu. Bhat-Bhateni Department Store has a branch on the main Baneshwor road; pharmacies, pathology labs and diagnostic centres are abundant for medical-stay needs. KIST Bank and most ATMs accept international cards.

Connectivity to the rest of the valley. Thamel is 15 minutes by taxi via Putalisadak; Patan via the Bagmati bridge at Tinkune is 10 minutes; Boudhanath is 20 minutes north via the Ring Road; Pashupatinath is 12 minutes. New Baneshwor's position on the Ring Road also makes it the practical pickup point if you're heading out of the valley to Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Pokhara highway buses or the Tibet border crossing.

One thing to know. Apartments in New Baneshwor are typically 20-30% cheaper per night than equivalent space in Lazimpat or Thamel because there's no tourism premium. If you don't need walking-distance heritage and you do need airport proximity / hospital access, this is the best value central postcode.

Distances You'll Actually Want

Best for medical travellers

Norvic, Grande and B&B Hospitals — Nepal's three largest private medical facilities — sit within a single Ring-Road-adjacent kilometre. New Baneshwor apartments are typically lift-served, with options on ground or low floors for mobility-restricted patients and accompanying family. Most blocks have a pharmacy on the street level for prescription pickup.

Best for BICC conference delegates

If your trip is built around a Birendra International Convention Centre event, New Baneshwor puts you a 5-10 minute walk from the venue — no taxi each morning, no Kathmandu rush-hour stress. Most apartments have working desks suited for evening session prep.

Best for early-flight travellers

Closest postcode in central Kathmandu to the airport — 10-15 minutes via the Ring Road versus 25-30 from Thamel. For 4am departures (common on Kathmandu-Lukla mountain flights) the time saved is worth it; pair with our airport pickup option for the return.

FAQ

Frequently Asked

How long is the airport transfer from New Baneshwor?
10-15 minutes by Ring Road taxi outside peak hours — the shortest of any central Kathmandu neighbourhood. Good for early flights, especially the Kathmandu-Lukla mountain flights that leave at first light.
Is New Baneshwor a tourist area?
No — it is a business, medical and conference district. Tourists usually base in Thamel, Lazimpat or Boudhanath and visit New Baneshwor only for specific appointments. Stay here if function matters more than ambience.
Which hospitals are walking distance?
Norvic International Hospital (700m, 9 min walk) and Grande International Hospital (1.8km, short taxi) are the closest of the major private hospitals. B&B Hospital is on Annapurna Marg about 5 minutes by taxi.
Is BICC walkable from a New Baneshwor apartment?
Yes — BICC sits on the main Baneshwor road, 5-10 minutes' walk from most apartment blocks in the area. No need to taxi every conference day.
Are restaurants and groceries available nearby?
Yes — Bhat-Bhateni Baneshwor (supermarket with imported groceries and pharmacy) is on the main road. Restaurants are functional rather than tourist-oriented — Indian, Nepali, Chinese; the Hyatt Regency rooftop is the upscale option. For more variety, Putalisadak / Durbar Marg is a 6-minute taxi west.
Is the Ring Road noise an issue at night?
Apartments directly facing the Ring Road can be noisy with night-time freight traffic. Apartments two or three blocks back are noticeably quieter — ask us when booking which units face away from the main road.
